John Crouch Spoke to Historic Tanglefoot Association
January 18, 2010 John Crouch, a partner in the accounting firm of Crouch, Farley & Heuring, PC, spoke to the Historic Tanglefoot Association at Petit Paree restaurant in Festus, Missouri, on January 12, 2010. John’s presentation focused on tax credits that benefit building owners. The Historic Tanglefoot Association is a group of property owners, business people and other people interested in the Festus downtown district. The tax credits John gave information about included the US Rehabilitation credit, the US and MO Disabled Access credits, the US and MO Rehabilitation of Certified Historical Structures credits and the Missouri Neighborhood Assistance Program credit. These credits can be highly effective tools in reducing the costs of building-related projects.

John Crouch Attended AICPA National Business Valuation Conference
December 16, 2009 John Crouch, a partner in the accounting firm of Crouch, Farley & Heuring, PC, recently attended the AICPA National Business Valuation Conference in San Francisco, CA. The three-day conference was hosted by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. The conference was customized to the professional goals of each attendee. John received specialized training in a variety of topics including personal goodwill valuation, valuation for tax purposes, application of the AICPA valuation standards and buy-sell agreements. In addition, John attended sessions on lost profit damages, communication skills for expert witnesses and closely held owner-employee compensation.
John has 35 years of business valuation experience including serving as an expert in trials and disputes involving valuation of financial assets. He is accredited in business valuation by the AICPA.

Local Accountants Attended Tax Updates Training
November 25, 2009 Crouch, Farley & Heuring, PC, a local accounting firm, recently sent one partner and four employees to a training seminar hosted by the National Association of Tax Professionals. The training seminar was entitled “The Essential 1040” and was designed to familiarize accountants and tax preparers with the new provisions that impact the 2009 tax season for individual tax returns. Tax law changes can be complicated and with tax season just around the corner, the firm is gaining knowledge to provide their clients with planning considerations for the upcoming year. The seminar helped the attendees learn to identify taxpayers entitled to dependency exemptions and other tax benefits including the earned income credit, child tax credit and dependent care credit. Among other things, the seminar taught the attendees how to explain the tax ramifications of selling a principle residence and how to identify the tax treatment of retirement plan and IRA distributions.

Local Accountants Attended Retirement Planning Seminar
November 25, 2009 Crouch, Farley & Heuring, PC, a local accounting firm, recently sent four accountants to a training seminar hosted by Surgent McCoy, CPE LLC at the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants Learning Center in St. Louis. The training seminar was entitled “Determining How Much Money You Need to Retire, and Tax Ideas and Money Management in Retirement.” It was designed to give CPAs the tools and knowledge required to help their clients implement tax-effective investment and portfolio strategies for successful wealth accumulation and real after-tax retirement income maintenance. There is a growing segment of the public for whom effective retirement planning is critical as they reach their peak earning years and/or are approaching retirement. The major topics of the seminar included asset allocation, portfolio management, and investment selection concepts, historical guidelines and benchmarks for nominal and real after-tax returns, worksheets and formulas for determining how much money one needs in retirement and distribution and asset liquidation planning. Topics also discussed in the seminar included sustainable portfolio withdrawal rates during retirement, analysis of the regular IRA to Roth IRA conversion election, and the impact of recent tax law.

Laurie Sundhausen Attended Physicians Finances Training
October 27, 2009 Laurie Sundhausen, a managing accountant in the accounting firm of Crouch, Farley & Heuring, PC, recently attended a training seminar on Physicians Finances. The training seminar was hosted by the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants and was designed to equip CPAs to effectively assist physicians in business management strategies. The seminar helped to foster an understanding of Medicare and its effect on the typical medical practice. The specialized training also focused, among other things, on analysis of revenue coding and realization, tax saving techniques for physician financial planning and practice operation including fraud prevention through appropriate controls.

Rick Heuring Attended Social Security Benefits Training
September 11, 2009 Rick Heuring, a partner in the accounting firm of Crouch, Farley & Heuring, PC, recently attended a training seminar on Social Security Benefits. The training seminar was hosted by the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants and was designed to equip CPAs to effectively advise clients who may be eligible for benefits. Social Security can be a complicated system to navigate. The seminar helped to foster an understanding of when to begin distributions, how survivor and disability benefits work, and all the ins and outs of Social Security. The specialized training also focused, among other things, on identifying opportunities to increase social security benefits, gaining a perspective of how benefits are calculated and taxed and planning to recover all that was paid in, and more.
